Objectivos
debates on monetary policy benefit from information drawn from past national and international collective experiences in the past. Specific learning objectives: a) To understand the political properties of currency in the construction of national spaces and their dynamics over the long run. b) To identify hallmark periods in European monetary history between 1800 and 2001; c) To evaluate the importance of monetary systems in sustaining hegemonic powers within various international economic orders. Objectives aimed at generic skills and competencies: a) Develop analytical and critical thinking skills b) Practice researching and collecting information from diverse sources c) Enhance oral and written communication skills d) Foster teamwork and team leadership skills

1. Currency in the construction of political and economic spaces: the 19th century as an experience in building monetary unions 2. The first globalization: monetary regimes in the center and the periphery 3. Monetary and financial shocks and crises between the world wars of the 20th century 4. Europe and Bretton Woods: liquidity and credibility 5. The European experience in the world: the stages of construction of the European Monetary System 6. Singularity and reproduction in the solution of the Maastricht Treaty: the single currency
Método de Avaliação
The course hours will be dedicated to theoretical-practical classes, which will include lectures and students’ participation in the form of debates, short written reports, and oral presentations. The supporting materials will include academic literature, educational videos, and reports from European governmental and banking institutions. For students who choose the semester-based assessment option, the continuous assessment will replace the regular exam, with a weighting of 60% for in-class assignments and 40% for a test.
