Objectivos

This unit is an intermediate course focused in short- and medium-run macroeconomic theory. The aim of the course is to help students to develop a consistent and critical way of thinking about key macroeconomic phenomena such as business-cycle fluctuations, unemployment, inflation, and the role of fiscal and monetary policies in stabilizing a small open economy. Students are expected to develop analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, and some practical knowledge of the Portuguese economy.

1. Short-run macroeconomics: basic concepts and stylized facts 2. Open economies with excess capacity: the IS-LM model 3. Inflation and unemployment in open economies: the AD-AS model 4. An introduction to microeconomic foundations of macroeconomics

Método de Avaliação

In each week, there are 2 one-hour lectures and 1 two-hour seminar. In both types of class examples preferably taken from the Portuguese or European economies are used to illustrate the topics. In assessment, there is an online individual assignment with data on the Portuguese economy and made in Excel with a weight of 10% in the final mark, one online mid-term multiple choice test with 15 questions with a 20% weight, a set of 3 short unannounced theory questions in any class (handing in 2 is compulsory for the normal period) with a weight of 20% in the final mark, and an exam (shorter in the normal period) with a 70% weight.
