Objectivos

The objective is to study modern economic growth. Having completed this curricular unit, the aim is that students will: - Understand the significance of economic growth and related basic concepts and also know the main milestones in the evolution of the theoretical concepts of the history of economic thinking; - Have a good understanding of the principle models of economic growth and their use to understand and distinguish the various conditioning factors of economic growth; - Know about the main statistical sources and be able to recognise the principle characteristic facts of modern economic growth, as well as to be able to understand and debate current issues related to the growth of economies. - Know current debates in macroeconomics, such as on inequality, strategic choices such as industrialization or cimate change adaptation and mitigation.

1. What is economic growth? - Economic growth: data and facts. - Theories of growth: a brief historical summary. 2. The neoclassical model of growth. - The neoclassical model (Solow-Swan) of economic growth. - The Solow model of human capital. - Empirical evidence of the Solow model. 3. Endogenous models of growth. - Endogenous models of growth. The AK model. - Technology, technological development and the economy of ideas. - The Romer model and the Schumpeter model. 4. Complimentary topics about growth. - Social infrastructures and the role of institutions. - Population and an economically sustainable economic growth. -Sustainability of social protection, industrialization and strategic choices - Natural resources, climate change and economic growth.

Método de Avaliação

The final grade, on a 0-20 scale, is awarded on the basis of a written exam. Alternatively, the student can choose an exam plus two short essays.
