Objectivos
CKnowledge of the main schools of economic science and economic doctrines of our days and their origins. Support to the acquisition of skill needed for the profession of economist.
Programa
I – Can capitalism work ? — the discovery of market mechanisms by economic analysis (16th – 19th centuries) II – Can capitalism survive ? — challenges to capitalism and capitalist responses (19th – 20th centuries) III – Can socialism work ? — questions about the possibility of centrally planned economies (20th century) IV – Can socialism survive ? — from practice to collapse of centrally planned economies (20th century) V – Can mankind survive ? — ecological desequilibria and the clash of civilizations (21st century)
Método de Avaliação
Semester assessment semester grade = unweighted arithmetic mean of the grades of 6 exercises of different character (quizzes; presentations; debates) to be held, partly individually, partly in working teams, in practical classes. Normal exam Scheme A final grade = 0.6 semester grade + 0.4 exam grade exam — written, closed-book examination; 1 hour; 2 questions to be chosen from 4 questions proposed Scheme B final grade = exam grade exam — written, closed-book examination; 2 hours; 4 questions. Repeat exam final grade = exam grade exam — written, closed-book examination; 2 hours; 4 questions.
