Objectivos

Improve basic oral and written communication skills. Train the selection and edition of relevant information and discourse. Understand the specificities of science communication, considering the publics, objectives and main channels of communication. To understand the relationship of science and the media.

Programa

1. Science communication – objectives, actors, media. Design thinking exercise. 2. Science in the media – writing as a journalist. Social media. 3. Science communication – storytelling and oral presentations. Data visualization. 4. Institutional communication. Risk communication and crisis. 5. Science and Art. 6. Editing Workshop.

Método de Avaliação

Lectures start with a presentation of the theme, techniques and examples and open up for a debate upon the experiences and expectations of the group. Each lecture is 3h long and revolves around a well-defined theme, previously known by students, including the schedule for exercise presentation and discussion. All resources referred in class are made available for further exploration and reference. Evaluation has several practical components, including: • Writing a biosketch – biographical narrative note of professional scope. • Choice and oral presentation of a piece of art in the interface between art and science. • Written feature on a S&T theme of choice, maximum 5000 characters, aimed at a lay audience.
