Objectivos

This course has as its primary objective the training of students to carry out research work autonomously preparing them for the completion of the Masters’ project. This course aims to present and discuss most common issues that arise when one does empirical analysis in economics and social sciences. It is focused on the presentation and discussion of solutions, identifying the most suitable technique to address different types of research questions. Main statistical methods are presented and students are introduced to the theory and practice of sampling, and to the use of enquiries in empirical analysis. An applied problem solving approach is adopted with exposition sessions followed by hands-on sessions to illustrate the use of the methods taught.

Método de Avaliação

The course is taught in theoretical-practical classes that combine expository moments that aim to provide a general framework of the subject and practical moments that are intended for the application and clarification of students' doubts. There are lecture handouts and summaries of the topics covered in each class to which the students have access in advance. The lecturer covers the main topics and focuses in those that are usually more difficult. The exercises to be solved are also made available in advance and they cover all the topics in the course outline. In each exercise it is made clear the topic that is being covered. Most classes take place in the lab where it is simulated the use of methods and statistical packages. Assessment in this course weights highly work performed in classes considering participation, exercises solved and reports presented both individually and in groups. In the final grade, this component weights 50% in the final mark.
