Objectivos
To introduce students to methods of applied economic analysis; To introduce descriptive statistics concepts and data analysis techniques; To introduce students to research and information processing techniques; To introduce the use of spreadsheets.
Programa
1. Fundamental notions about carrying out empirical work in Economics and Management - Characteristics of empirical work in economics and management; - Types of information used in empirical work in economics and management; - Techniques used in empirical work in economics and management; - Use of spreadsheets to carry out empirical work; 2. Basic methods and techniques of statistical analysis of economic and business data - Fundamental concepts; - Data reduction and synthesis; - Absolute changes and rates of change; - Index numbers; - Chronological successions; - Association and relationship between variables; 3. Basic methods and techniques of document information analysis - Methodological procedures in research; - Documentary information research and analysis techniques; - Information and data sources; 4. Presentation of results of analysis of economic and business information - Reporting - Preparing presentations
Método de Avaliação
Theoretical presentation of each topic described in the syllabus; Individual and group practicals using Excel and by-hand; Group discussion. Assessment methods: distributed evaluation with a group research assignment on literature review (worth 15%), a group research assignment on applied data analysis (worth 35%), and an individual exam in which the minimum score must be 7/20 (worth 50%).
