Economics 1 - Management
Assessment Rules
1 st Semester of 2019-20
There are two assessment options in Economics 1: the normal period assessment and the appeal period assessment. The recommended way is to take the normal period assessment, as it encourages work during the semester, making it easier for you to successfully learn. Besides, if you take the normal period assessment and fail, you can still take the exam in the appeal period; if you pass the continuous assessment, you can also use it to improve your grade if you choose to take the exam in the appeal period instead of the normal period.
Normal Period
The assessment in the normal period consists of a midterm test (MT) and the normal period exam (NPE). The two components are compulsory: if you do not take part in the midterm test you will not be allowed to take the normal period exam.
To obtain approval in the normal period you must obtain at least 7.5 in the normal period exam. If the grade in the NPE is under 7.5, you automatically fail and the final grade (NF) will be that grade.
If the grade in the NPE is at least 7.5,
Your final grade (NF) will be
NF = 0,60 * NPE grade + 0,40 * MT grade , if the MT grade is at least equal to the NPE grade OR if the MT grade ≤ 5.
NF = NPE grade , if the MT grade is lower than the NPE grade as long as the MT grade > 5.
The midterm test is an individual 75-minute test consisting of multiple-choice questions and an open-answer exercise with several alineas. It will take place on the 28th of October, at 8.30 am. We will announce the topics covered in the test in due time. You can use an authorised calculator (a non-graphing calculator) but no other electronic devices, books, notes, or any other aid material in this test.
The normal period exam (exame em época normal) consists of multiple-choice questions and open-ended questions and exercises of the type that has been used in previous years. It will take place on the 6th January 2020, at 9 am. You cannot use any books, notes, electronic devices, or any other learning material. You can use non-graphing calculators, but cannot use graphing ones.
NOTE: Also Student Workers need to do the MT in order to have the normal period assessment. In case the Student Worker has not taken the MT, he/she can only take the appeal period exam.
Appeal Period
The appeal period assessment (exame em época de recurso), is an alternative to the normal period assessment.
The students that use this period assessment are those: i) who did not take the MT, ii) who did not take the NPE or had a grade less than 7,5, iii) who had a NF under 10.
The appeal period exam (APE) is of the same type and subject to the same rules as the normal period exam. It will take place on the 3rd February 2020, at 12.00.
The midterm test grade will count towards your final grade with a 40% weight as in the normal period if it improves on your grade in the appeal period exam (but, again, you must have at least 7.5 in the exam).
NF = 0,60 * APE grade + 0,40 * MT grade , if the MT grade is at least equal to the NPE grade as long as APE grade is at least 7,5
NF = APE grade , otherwise.
NOTE: If you have already successfully completed the course but use the appeal period exam to improve your grade, the grade of the MT will no longer count .
Fraud
Fraud in any assessment is punishable under Article 12 of ISEG's General Regulations for Assessment of Undergraduate Degrees, Students Disciplinary Regulations of the University of Lisbon, and the general law, namely the Código dos Direitos de Autor e dos Direitos Conexos (copyright and related rights).
