Session by Prof João Aparicio.
Basically, this talk offered a personal view of data and network science across research, real-world projects, industry, and policy, showing how the hardest problems are rarely about algorithms alone, but about modelling, judgment, and responsibility under imperfect information.

The session, "Evolving a Data Practice in a €500M/Year AI-Powered Product
Organization" took students on an inside look at how a fast-growing
tech unicorn like OutSystems is built and run from a data perspective. We
started by unpacking the data architecture that underpins a complex,
multi-stream business at scale, covering how we balance revenue growth with
cost optimization. From there, we explored the strategic partnership between
Product and Data, sharing real examples of how product managers leverage data
to detect adoption patterns, address customer pain points, and shape effective
product roadmaps.
We closed with what is the most exciting, and perhaps most pressing, topic for
the students: how the AI era is reshaping the data profession. We were
candid about the skills that matter today versus tomorrow.

This session explores how Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques can be applied to real business challenges, drawing on selected case studies and successful Master’s Final Work (MFW) projects developed in the field of Data Analytics for Business. Through practical examples, participants will see how data-driven approaches can support decision-making and generate meaningful value for organizations.
One of the central topics of the session is Time Series Forecasting, focusing on the comparison between statistical methods, machine learning approaches, and deep learning models. The session will also present recent developments in neural networks—biologically inspired models that have driven many of the major advances in artificial intelligence over the past two decades, including the emergence of large language models. Particular attention will be given to Kolmogorov–Arnold Networks, which introduce learnable activation functions.
The session also aims to help students identify potential research directions for their Master’s Final Work. By discussing concrete applications and methodological approaches, participants will gain inspiration and guidance on how to transform relevant business questions into impactful data analytics projects.
