Dimensional Modeling, Data Mining, Classification

10 Novembro 2016, 10:30 ANA MARIA MARQUES RIBEIRO DOS SANTOS LUCAS

This lecture has started with an exercise on dimensional modeling (university library example). Then, they have learnt what data mining means and which categories of data mining tasks exist. Some common terms and concepts are introduced (algorithm, heuristic, cross-validation, overfitting, pruning etc.) Naïve Bayes is presented and an exercise is done.

Data Warehouse and Dimensional Modeling

9 Novembro 2016, 14:30 ANA MARIA MARQUES RIBEIRO DOS SANTOS LUCAS

In this lecture the students have learnt why a data warehouse is needed in a business intelligence environment. The differences between OLTP and OLAP systems are explained. The approaches of Inmon and Kimball are shown and the concept of dimensional modelling, especially the star schema, is presented by an example. Therefore, terms like "fact" and "dimension", but also "surrogate key" or "slow changing dimension" are introduced. The differences between a star schema and a normalized E/R model are illustrated.
