In this module, we will discuss recent trends and debates of the world economic and social development (neoliberalism, financialization, globalization and value chains). We will look at their historical logic, articulation, contradictions and tensions, and their impact on options for social transitions and transformation.

In this module, we will analyze, compare and discuss Marxist and neo-Marxist political economy, their analytical applications and their contribution to the debate on social transition and transformation. 


Module 6: Development theory: 20th Century perspectives – 2

In this module, we will explore Developmentalist and Modernisation theories, examining their historical context, core assumptions, and influence on post-war development strategies. We will analyse the linear progression model proposed by Modernisation theorists, which positions Western industrial societies as the benchmark for development, and Developmentalist approaches that emphasize state-led industrialisation and economic planning. 


Module 5: Development theory: 20th Century perspectives – 1

5-hour module taught on 13 and 16 October by Susana Brissos.


In this module, we will analyse Karl Polanyi’s The Great Transformation (1944), focusing on the concepts of embeddedness and the double movement, as well as the Institutionalist Political Economy framework proposed by Ha-Joon Chang, while revisiting the origins of “old” institutionalism and its evolution throughout the twentieth century.


Module 4: Classical theories of modernity and development

This session will present and discuss some selected contributions of classical 19th and 20th Century social scientists to thinking about modernity and development.
