Module 3: Development, colonialism and imperialism
19 Setembro 2025, 18:00 • Alexandre Abreu
5-hour module taught on 29 September and 2 October by Francisco Roque de Oliveira (IGOT).
In
the post-WWII context, imperial states promoted a cooperative effort involving
the social sciences in general, which sought to respond to the challenges posed
by emerging anti-colonialism. The developmental policies then designed by these
same states for their colonial territories presupposed reforms in scientific
policy institutions geared towards colonial territories. We will explore this
decisive phase in the global history of "imperial science’ using examples
taken from the practice of Portuguese colonial/tropical geography after 1945,
both in Africa and in Asia.
