Capitalism is
undergoing its latest transformation. As a more than 200 year-old system, it
remains dynamic and unpredictable. In this session, we discuss upheaval across
scales. On the one hand, uncertainty and instability are defining features in
the world of work for most people. Furthermore, those people are increasingly driven
by different orientations towards business and work itself. On the other, corporate
performance is no longer measured simply as shareholder value. Corporate purpose
in the 21st century is no longer an irrelevant question: owners, managers,
shareholders and workers, as well as those interested in the role of corporations
in the global economy, are engaging in renewed debate on the nature, purpose
and relevance of corporate forms. Session
3 will be organised according to the following topics:
1) Jobs and
Automation
EMBEDDING DATA AND DIGITALISATION
22 Setembro 2022, 09:30 • Luis Mah
In this Session, we look at the political economy
of data and digitalization. In 2014, Wired magazine declared that “data is the
new oil”. Six years later, the global economy is increasingly digital, data has
never been more valuable and boundaries between on and off-line lives are increasingly
blurred. What is the significance of data as fuel of digitalization and technological
change? This question allows us to discuss who stands to gain from the valuation,
trade and monetization of data. What are the economic patterns arising out of digitalization?
The emergence of big tech and platform capitalism poses important questions as to
how the global economy will develop in coming decades. Session 2 will be organised according to the
following topics:
1) Data, Algorithms and Big Tech
