Session 1 - Resetting the State

In this Session, we will address the important changes that have been taking place in the recent past with regards to state interventionism. After a prolonged period in which free-market ideology had a dominant position in the global landscape, states worldwide have been adopting a more active stance with regards to economic policy to respond to contemporary challenges. COVID-19 has proved the role of the state in the economy remains important and relevant. ‘Resetting the state’ will be critically examined from both material and ideological standpoints. Central issues, such as the rise of sovereign wealth funds and state-owned enterprises, as well as the revival of active industrial policies, will be analysed and framed in the context of the current global economic landscape. The causes and the political economy consequences of these changes will be also reflected upon, with special attention being devoted to the ascendance of China and the responses it is triggering in both developed and developing countries. Session 1 will be organised according to the following topics:
